The mission of Faith In Practice is to improve the physical, spiritual, and economic conditions of the poor in Guatemala through short-term surgical, medical and dental mission trips and health-related educational programs.
I was recently in Honduras with the Central American Medical Outreachhttp://www.camo.org/
CAMO has been working in the city of Santa Rosa de Copan since 1993 and has developed ongoing relationships with physicians, dentists and others in the community. CAMO sends teams twice a year but accepts donations of medical equipment and supplies year-round. They are in the process of updating the website, so contact them if you are interested in helping.
Thanks Linda for listing these organizations here. My hope is that those of us using Spanish in Health Care will use this forum to network. And your post is a great start!
Another orgainzation is VOSH (Volenteer Optemetric Services to Humanity). You may recall my series on podcasts regarding Eye Care. This was the brain child of Christine, a optometrist who goes down to Guatemala twice yearly through this organization.
From my experience with medical trips to Latin America, I think groups providing dental, optometric and surgical services are awesome, because the group brings a gift that stays after they leave. If you are an internist like me, it is best to find an organization which is in place all year round and and which incorporates the local providers. This way, services are maintained after you leave, and you work to empower the system already in place.
two organizations of note
Here are a couple of wonderful organizations that do medical work in Central America.
My sister, who is a nurse, has been to Guatemala 3 times with Faith in Practice http://www.faithinpractice.org/index.php
