What ideas do you have for future episodes of Medical Spanish?

Molly

Other ideas

Thank you so much for doing this website!  The podcasts are very useful and your grammar lessons are excellent.  The dialogues are so thorough.  I especially like the feature of being able to read the dialogues as  well.  A couple suggests that I have for dialogues that would help me in my work as a hospitalist:
1) Description of gout (including explaination and treatment plan)
2) Meningitis
3) Atrial fibrillation & arrythmia
4) Asking a history of on a chronic vegetative patient (chronic trach)
i.e. history of cardiopulmonary arrest, accident/trauma, etc

5) Diabetes education with a newly diagnosed or noncompliant diabetic including explaining the disease process and its potential complications if the diabetes is not well controlled including heart attacks, strokes, diabetic neuropathy, kidney disease, amputation, etc.

Gracias!

Internal Medicine Topics

Hi Lisa! These are all Internal Medicine topics, so I would be more than happy to cover them!

With regards to diabetes, check out the list of previous podcasts here. We did three diabetes podcasts last year.

Neurology

Recently I had to translate for a pediatric neurologist. Bottom line, the MRI scan showed a 6 cm brain tumor in your son's left temporal lobe and to live he needs surgery to remove it within the next 3 months.

I thought this might make a podcast with the addition of exams like PET and CT along with surgical procedures like getting a Vagus Nerve Stimulator.  What to do for seizures, autism, etc.  Complications of medicines like Depakote (blood test & liver)

Also drug usage, coke, pot, etc. How to best speak this language with teens.

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I most wanted to learn in Spanish.

CT and MRI

Hi Dr. Molly!

I really appreciate your hard work on this practical podcasts!

If you have a chance, could you please consider the dialogue to explain the difference between CT scan and MRI to our patients in Spanish?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

one of your students:)

Radiology podcast

I will try to incorporate this into a podcast on radiology. Thanks for adding it the forum. I will base all future podcasts on suggestions posted in this forum.

Procedures, Radiology, Seizures, Drugs.

These are wonderful ideas. Thank you for posting your ideas in the forum. I will continue to base all future podcasts on the ideas located here. Currently we are working on Workers' Compensation and Ob/Gyn.

Una idea

Hola Molly.  I am a pediatric practitioner in California.  I would love to have a podcast that has information regarding speaking to parent.  This would be taking a case history (birth history, developmental history, asking any parental concerns) and giving results regarding the child patient.  So basically talking about another individual who cannot answer my questions.

Thanks for all you do!

Doc Molly's picture

Speaking with parents.

Hi Rebeca. This is a great idea! Thanks so much for adding it to the forum. I'm planning write the future podcasts based on on suggestions posted in this forum. Currently I'm working on a Workers' Comp (request sent by email) podcast and an Ob/Gyn series. Peds will be next. Being I'm an internist who works only with adults, any suggestions are appreciated. Feel free to use the contact us tab to send me an email with typical questions you ask parents regading the birth and developmental history. Otherwise, I'm sure I'll be able to come up with a basic interview based off my Pediatrics training during Medical School.

Undocumented Immigrants

Thanks for the podcast.  It has been very helpful for me as I've been working in a free immigrant clinic.  Do you think there's enough material for a podcast on issues surrounding undocumented immigrants?  I know a lot of this would vary by state, but I would be interested in a general treatment of social security, insurance for kids born in the US to undocumented parents, and ways to say various types of immigration status.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

Resources re: Undocumented Immigrants

Hi Jason,

I'm so glad you find the podcast helpful! And it is great to hear that you are putting your Spanish to use working in a free clinic.

I agree that learning about the financial issues pertaining to health care for the undocumented immigrant is important. However, I do not feel that I am qualified to handle it.  I am going to stick to my expertise of medicine. However, if anyone out there, would like to post some links to resources regarding this issue, it would be much appreciated!

The best place to post these links would be in the Cross-Cultural Training Forum.

Thank you Jason for your suggestion, and maybe with some help from other listeners we could gather enough information here to make a podcast.

Phlebotomy/laboratory

Could you give some examples of conversation for the phlebotomist/patient.  For instance.

Do you have insurance? or will you pay with cash or check?

Have you been fasting? (Need to ask if they have not had anything to eat in the past 12-14 hours)

At what time did you last eat or drink?

For this test you should not eat or drink for 12-14 hours. Except you can have water or plain black coffee.

Please fill out this form.

Please have a seat.

(for children) Please do not move, be very very still and this will not hurt. You did very good.  Now we are finished.

(for parents) Can you hold him/her in your lap?

I also need a urine sample.  Here is a cup. The bathroom is across the hall over there.

Phlebotomy/laboratory Podcast

Yes... I will definitely do a podcast on this topic! Thanks so much for the suggestions! I love it.. Please don't hesitate to add more. It really helps to have examples of common dialogues you have with patients on a daily basis. I will add this to the list of upcoming topics, and with your examples, I'm off to a good start. Thanks!

STIs

I love your podcast! Thank you so much for providing us with such a wonderful free resource.

I noticed you have an OBGYN episode, but it did not discuss STIs. I would love to hear a podcast that discusses different STIs, transmission of them etc.

Thanks again!

Doc Molly's picture

More OB/GYN podcasts coming soon!

I'm so glad you like the podcast. Great idea! I am planning to do a big series on OB/GYN. I will be sure to include one or two episodes on STDs/STIs.

I really appreciate all idease left by listeners. Thanks so much.

Triage Questions

First I want to thank you for your excellent program. I have told the ER Dr's about your podcast and they liked it too. I listen to it to and from work.

Here is something similar to what you've done earlier. I took this directly from our triage questions:

Hi, my name is Mary

Please sit down

Why are you here tonight?

Please answer slowly

(Hopefully, I get their answer)

When did your pain start? hours? days? months? years? ago?

Can you point to your pain?

Between 1 and 10 with 10 being the worst pain, can you give me a number for your pain?

Does the pain come and go?

Do you have nausea?

Did you vomit? how many times?

Did you have shortness of breath?

Does your pain radiate anywhere? Can you point to where it radiates?

Has this happened to you before?

I'm going to take your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature and pulse ox. It shows the percentage of oxygen in your lungs.

Do you take any medicines?

Do you have a list?

Do you have any allergies to medicines?

Do you smoke? Do you drink alcohol, occasionally or regularly?

Do you want to report anyone who is abusing you, either verbally or emotionally?

How much do you weigh?

Thank you, we are going to the exam room now ( or you need to go to the waiting room and we will call you as soon as we can.

ER Triage

This is a great idea for a podcast. Some of these questions have been covered in previous podcasts. Check out the following podcasts on the Medical Spanish Podcast page:

Abdominal Pain podcasts (the first two at the bottom of the page), Vital Signs podcasts, Back Pain podcasts, the Car Accident podcast, the Anesthesia podcast.

The others I will try to incorporate in the upcoming General Medical History podcasts and maybe it would help to do a podcast with all of your above questions in one. I like the idea of doing a ER Triage Podcast series, so if people have more triage questions, please add them here. I really appreciate the input, and thanks midgett49 for writing specific phrases you would like to know.

Also, another listener just wrote a request for Labor & Delivery podcasts, which we will definitely do!

vocabulary

Hi Molly,
I noticed that sometimes you use different words in different podcasts to translate the same word or phrase....for example, to tranlsate "congested" you used the word "congestionado" in one podcast and "constipado" in another one. Do these mean exactly the same thing or is there a difference?
Thanks for all your hard work!

Doc Molly's picture

Congestionado vs. Constipado

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your question. Both congestionado and constipado mean the same thing. I had a tendency to always use constipado, but as I reviewed medical topics in Spanish and listened to people talk, I realized that congestionado is used just as often. Therefore, I decided to use congestionado in the Red Eye podcast, instead of constipado, which I used in the Common Cold podcast.

I see now that I should make forum topics regarding these specific podcasts, so that people have an easy place to put their quesitons regarding specific podcasts.

Saludos!

Doc Molly

la jaqueca

Acabo de escuchar el podcast sobre la jaqueca. Muy bien hecho! Sabes si la palabra "jaqueca" se usa por todas partes? Significa cualquier tipo de dolor de cabeza o sólo el más fuerte?

Doc Molly's picture

We'll stick to the forum.

After answering your question in the comments section for that podcast, I realized that using the forum as a place to ask these questions is better. Thus... I have created a bunch of new forum topics representing podcasts published thus far, and from now on, we'll stick to the forums. Of course, feel free to leave comments after podcasts as well.

Thanks Linda for being one of the first (and few :) to leave comments and questions!

Plastic Surgery in Mexico

Hola Molly,
Me llamo is Debi. Soy estudiente espanol y yo estudiar una ano.
I don't have a great command of Spanish yet, but I live in an area with many Spanish speakers and I learn more and more each day. I start formal classes at the college in September.
Next spring I will be traveling to TJ, Mexico for some major surgery. I'll be working on learning the medical Spanish between now and then, but some terms in conjunction with plactic surgery would be helpful. I have other specific terms I would be interested in, however I don't wish to devulge more of my private life than necessary to the www. I'd be happy to tell you more in private so you can focus your broadcast better, if you are interested.
Also, information about hotels/reservations and border crossing might be helpful (San Diego).
Thank you,
Debi

Plastic Surgery Podcast & Vocab for Travel

Hi Debi,

Thanks for your idea. I choose the topics for the Medical Spanish Podcast to help Heatlh Professionals serve the Spanish Speaking community. There are many surgeons who go down to Latin America to do surgery on those with disabling defects, so I'm sure some podcasts on Plastic Surgery would be helpful. I will definitely add this to my list. Not being a surgeon... this will take some research, so any of you out there who can help me out, email me by clicking on the Contact Us tab. Thanks so much.

As far as vocab for hotels, etc... the two audio series that I really like are "Instant Immersion: Spanish" by Jenny Lona and "Ultimate Spanish" by Living Language. I'll be including these to the Amazon Store, once we have it ready.

Thanks again for your input, and best of luck in Mexico. Feel free to email any further details through the Contact Us tab.

Saludos!
Doc Molly

gracias

Linda

Gracias Linda. Esta es un idea buenísima. Voy a ponerlo en mi lista y hacerlo pronto.
